ITS BACK! RICH ENTERTAINMENT AT THE ASDA FOUNDATION STADIUM
Finally, after what seemed an eternity, football returned to the “ASDA Foundation” Stadium, thanks to a monumental effort by a dozen hardy souls preparing the pitch after a heavy Saturday morning deluge. Covers were removed, surface water was swept away or blow-dried and the pitch was forked. The pitch inspection was delayed and the Congleton outfit told not to travel until the game was certain to go ahead. A late kick-off allowed the strong wind an extra hour to dry the surface further.
Despite the pitch cutting up, the hardy fans who braved the biting wind and a fierce snow storm, were rewarded with a thoroughly entertaining encounter.
Since the Cobbydalers last league game on January 2nd, they have had only one friendly against Liversedge in which to stay match fit. The “Bears” have been more fortunate. Chris Reape brought in striker Michael Garrod for his debut, partnering him with Steven Palfrey.
The Bears, who had been managed by their Youth Team Coach for three months, had a new man at the helm, the experienced Jim Vince who was in charge for only his second game. Vince was in charge of AFC Halifax when the Cobbydalers met them in the F.A.Cup in 2008.
With the wind at their backs in the first half, Congleton were soon on the attack. Geoff Basford shot wide from twenty-five yards in the opening minutes before getting in a header at the back post, which James Mann did well to save. Basford appeared to be tripped in the box minutes later but the official ignored their claims for a penalty. To their credit they just got on with the game.
After being penned back for ten minutes, the Cobbydalers finally broke out of defence. Andy Lee picked the ball up on the halfway line before moving the ball across to Steven Palfey. He fed John Douglas on the right who crossed to the far post. Lee controlled the ball in an instant but his shot, from a narrow angle, went across the goalmouth.
The Bears, playing some neat football in small triangles, opened up the Cobbydalers again. Jack Graham broke through on Mann, who dived at his feet to block his effort. The ball spun away, but despite being injured, the Silsden keeper managed to block the follow up from Shane Reaney. A superb dribble by left-back Daniel Schwarz ended with a low cross, which went across the face of the Silsden goal.
Congleton continued to dominate both the possession and territory but the goal wouldn’t come. Mann saved from Reaney and both Schwarz and Kurtis Gill shot over the bar.
In only their second meaningful attack, the Cobbydalers took the lead. Jake McEneaney broke up the left onto a ball from James Nettleton. McEneaney’s deep cross sailed over the defence and keeper to the far post, where Danny BRYAN had only to nudge the ball into the Bears’ net. Two minutes later, with only five minutes left of the half, the Cobbydalers doubled their lead. There seemed little on when debutant GARROD received the ball on the edge of the Bears’ penalty area but his accurate chip left keeper Adam Little helpless. The scoreline was unbelievable and Steve Palfrey was only denied making it three-nil by a fine save from Little.
The Bears response was swift. Daniel Doherty, cutting in from the left, curled a right footer over the bar before REANEY pulled one back from close range. Even then Mann managed to deflect the shot onto the post before it crossed the line.
One might have expected the Cobbydalers to dominate the game in the second half, but within two minutes of the restart the Bears equalised. Reaney looked offside when he received the ball in the Silsden goal area but no flag was raised. Mann saved the striker’s first effort but REANEY put the rebound wide of the Silsden keeper. Douglas blocked a low shot from Chris Doherty to prevent the visitors from taking the lead.
Tim Hird came on for Gaughan on sixty minutes. A minute later Silsden took the lead. Keeper Little was put under pressure with a back pass. Lee challenged for the ball. The ball broke to GARROD who slid it into the empty net. Garrod then slid a pass though the defence to Palfrey who held off his marker. His shot grazed the top of the far post.
Mann saved at the feet of Koral who had sprinted through the defence. The Bears notched their third in the seventy-seventh minute. Andrew ALSTAN shot from the edge of the Silsden box. Mann appeared to have the ball covered but the wind held it up and it struck the bar. The assistant flagged for a goal indicating that the ball had crossed the line. Mann thought otherwise but it was three all.
Debutant Thomas Marshall was on for Bryan and Martin Trickett for Garrod as the Cobbydalers sought the winner. Danny Husband was just wide with a header then Marshall created an opening for Palfrey. Keeper Little was swiftly out to smother the ball then he made a dive to his left to keep out Lee’s curling free kick. Trickett headed to Husband who was again denied by Little. In the final minute Douglas riffled a shot over the bar.
The game had everything, goals, slick football, goalmouth incidents and controversy. Both sides might have won but there was only one winner. FOOTBALL! “Its back, it felt like the beginning of August, apart from the weather” said one of the Silsden supporters.
Next week the Cobbydalers travel to Alsager Town.
