A very heavy pitch with a great deal of sand on one wing greeted the Bears on Saturday - along with a strong wind, but thankfully, no rain.
Barnoldswick started like a train and Woodhouse pulled off a good save in the opening minute and the resulting corner was hammered wide. The Bears then also had opportunities and were pushing thr ball around well. The play was fairly even with both teams attacking at every opportunity. The forward runs of Doherty, Luby, Richards and Turner were causing problems in the Barlick defence, but no clear cut openings were created.
In one attack a great effort was cleared off the Barlick line and as the ball was [played back in a defender rose majestically to head the ball onto his own crossbar with the keeper no where.
Woodhouse was the busier of the two keepers and pulled off several good saves whilst the Barlick forwards wasted a number of opportunities.
HT: 0-0
The second half saw Barlick come out with purpose and they dominated most of the play as the Bears passing game started to desert them.
The opening goal came from a typical Bears muddle at the back and the ball was hammered home giving Woodhouse no chance. The home team continued to dominate with the Bears making only occasional forays into the Barlick penalty area.
The strengthening wind was not helping the Bears cause as more and more passes went astray.
The game was settled in the 78th minute when a Bears attack was broken down and the ball quickly moved forward. The ball was crossed into the area and hit with power into the net.
The final score could have been worse for the Bears had Woodhouse not been at his best.
This was a typical 'game of two halves' with the Bears being very competetive in the first half but then going off the ball in the second.
Next up the Bears meet Bootle at Booth Street.
