CONGLETON'S mini-revival hit the buffers when they were beaten by mid-table Colne at Booth Street.
Things appeared to be going to plan when Gareth Richards gave the Bears the lead, but Colne equalised soon after and dominated the second period to claim two further goals.
FALSE HOPE: Gareth Richards beats Colne keeper Chris Thompson to put Congleton ahead, but the visitors hit back.
TAKING A TUMBLE: Colne's Ben Bridson hits the deck as Congleton's Ian Willis makes progress.
••..Congleton's caretaker boss, Dean Sibson, was disappointed with his side's second-half showing.
"We came out with the intention to raise our tempo, but we couldn't get the right players on the ball in the right areas," he said.
"You have to take your hat off to Colne as they have played the game well.
"We didn't get a couple of breaks with refereeing decisions, but you just have to accept it and move on.
"It has been an honour to manage this club for the past five games, and if I was offered the job permanently I would take it. But that decision is out of my hands."
Colne started well and had the first effort on goal after three minutes, Mark Threlfall setting up Michael Woodvine, who shot wide.
Congleton responded, and almost created a chance five minutes later when a Keith Wedge through ball just evaded Chris Luby in the Colne penalty box.
The Bears took the lead on 20 minutes when Luby's superb pass sent Richards clear. His initial shot came back off the post, but he followed up to sweep home the rebound.
However, Congleton contrived to gift Colne an equaliser just three minutes later.
A Wedge back header fell well short of goalkeeper Ashley Woodhouse, allowing Threlfall to finish from inside the box.
Congleton almost re-established their lead on the half- hour when Matthew Walsh's thunderous long-range effort was bravely blocked by Stephen Pickup.
Richards again threatened before the break, but his effort was blocked by Daniel Gleave.
Colne began the second half with intent, and went close when Ben Bridson sent a long-range drive narrowly wide of the Congleton goal.
Congleton threatened six minutes later when a Daniel Docherty through ball found Luby, who shot across the face of the visitors' goal.
Gleave should have given Colne the lead on 66 minutes, but he fired over from point-blank range.
But it was only a momentary let-off for Congleton as Colne claimed the lead their second-half dominance warranted.
Woodvine claimed the ball 20 yards out from the Bears' goal, before firing in a superb effort which struck the inside of a post before nestling in the back of the hosts' net.
Colne almost extended the lead with 15 minutes left when a Threlfall cross found Bridson at the back post, but his effort was cleared off the line by Chris Middleton.
Colne should have been reduced to 10 men when Pickup hauled down Luby right on the edge of the penalty area, but the referee awarded a yellow card instead.
Congleton then wasted a superb opportunity to equalise on 79 minutes when a Jack Graham cross was headed wide from point-blank range by Middleton.
The miss proved costly for the hosts as Colne struck again 60 seconds later, Dominic Craig's ball over the top finding Samuel Hayes, who rounded Woodhouse before squaring to Mark Coyne for a simple tap in.
Congleton Town: Woodhouse, Wedge, Willis, Gill, Middleton, Coker, Graham (Booth, 84), Walsh, Richards (Landregan, 46), Luby, Docherty (Froman, 90). Not used: Dunnan, Bennett.
